Watermakers
Watermakers - Tips and Tricks > Articles > Watermakers
Many cruisers consider watermakers a necessary evil. It is a luxury to have fresh water all the time without having to fill up jerrycans from questionable sources a couple of times per week. But it comes with a prize: energy demands, noise and maintenance. We selected a watermaker with low energy demands and after two years of cruising we have optimized our setup and reduced and simplified the required maintenance. You don't have to reinvent the wheel: read our tips and tricks.

On our way to French Polynesia, day 25

Almost there! We could had arrived already but we don't want to anchor in the dark. So we try to go as slow as possible, together with Ziezo, the other catamaran we were racing against for the last few weeks.

Friday 5 July 2019, 05:25

On our way to French Polynesia, day 24

Yesterday no update. Some complex weathersystem was coming over and the wind kept changing, so I kept busy changing and trimming sails and watching the radar for squalls. Weather is fine again. Only 144nm to go!

Info, UTC: 2019-07-05 05:25, Local timezone: UTC-9, Speed: 4.6 knots, Heading: 267

Wednesday 3 July 2019, 08:47

Saturday 29 June 2019, 06:01

Friday 28 June 2019, 05:43

On our way to French Polynesia, day 17

Not much wind, so calm conditions. That opens possibilities to work on some projects, like the installation of the Lithium batteris for the ship. Well, soldering remains difficult on a moving ship...

Info, UTC: 2019-06-28 05:43, Local timezone: UTC-8, Speed: 6.6 knots, Heading: 239

Saturday 15 June 2019, 02:44

On our way to French Polynesia, day 4

Sailing remains a challenge in this area in this time of the year. Luckily we are almost out of the ITCZ. Again no wind, so motoring. For the first time in a few days we could see the moon!

Info, UTC: 2019-06-15 02:44, Local timezone: UTC-6, Speed: 5.0 knots, Heading: 175

Friday 14 June 2019, 04:49

On our way to French Polynesia, day 3

Like we feared, we will be stuck for some more days with rain, thunderstorms and little wind. Most of the day we have the engine running. We are now going pure south because that gives us the best speed and brings us as quickly as possible out of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone.

Info, UTC: 2019-06-14 04:49, Local timezone: UTC-5, Speed: 5.3 knots, Heading: 184

Thursday 13 June 2019, 04:13

Finally on our way to French Polynesia again! 4100 nautical miles to go. Thuinderstorms, like they have every day here near Panama at this time of the year. No wind, so motoring. We have 700 liters of diesel on board so with our consumption of 2 liters per hour we can do this for a while...

Bureaucratic issues

We are not welcome here! We're missing an autografo which we should be able to arrange here according to various sources, but apparently this is no longer possible. No we can't fix it, no we are not allowed to refuel or buy vegetables. Under military escort back to the boat. They are now watching us with binocculars to check that we don't go on land according to other boaters here. To annoy them we raised the pirates flag. Tomorrow morning a forced leave to the Marquesas.

Atlantic crossing, day 7

132nm sailed. Yesterday was difficult sailing with winds that were constantly changing in speed. After 17UTC everything got better. Weather has been utterly pleasant since departure: 25 degrees Celcius at night and 30 during the day. We can't believe it's almost december. Passed another 15 degrees so we set the clock again one hour back.

We sailed another 127 miles, but in a slightly different direction. We had some time to reconsider our schedule and wishes and we now think that skipping Suriname gives us more time for other things. We are now hading towards Grenada, which takes two more days of sailing but later saves five days. That is the nice thing with travelling by sail boat: you can adjust your plans whenever you like to.

Crossing to Cabo Verdes, day 4

Today was a gift: we had a nice ocean swell; high but slow and nicely from one direction, just as if the strict teacher of these little children had appeared and nobody dared to make a chaos anymore. We let the parasailor do its job this night because there was no indication at all that the wind would increase. Imagine this: full moon, clear sky full of stars, nice gentle motions and the parasailor quietly pulling our ship to the direction we want to go whilst every now and then there are glittering dolphins swimming next to the boat. This is how it was, absolutely fabulous! In the afternoon we pulled the parasailor down because the wind increased and was predicted to increase more and we did not want to take a risk with this giant 104 square meter sail!

Crossing to Cabo Verdes, day 3

I am late writing this report, too busy! Haha, no, just enjoying the sailing too much. Although the night before day three was actually not pleasant at all. The wind died on us, we were rolling heavily from one side to the other and we felt like a little duck in a giant bathtub messed up by a group of laughing little children. The next morning we were still rolling and we decided to put up our never used parasailor. And it was fantastic! It needs very little wind to keep our speed at or over 4 knots. We got a big dolphin show and we saw a turtle and were lucky to get him or her on a picture too! We were wondering why this cute turtle was drifting all alone on the open ocean but hey, maybe this smart animal was thinking the same about us; we didn't see any other ship since the day we left!

Crossing to Cabo Verdes Day 2

Not so much wind, so we are progressing slowly. Full moon, so at night we enjoy the same view as during the day: wherever we look only deep blue water. We are taking turns for sleeping, day and night, without schedule, just how we feel. Time and space are fading. We have adjusted the clock to UTC-1 but it feels irrelevant.

Crossing to Cabo Verdes

"Are you too running out of jobs to do?" asks our neighbour Ed. "Actually yes" Frans tells him, surprised himself that indeed after one and a half day of hard work, we have completed all the jobs we wanted to have done before we would set course to the Cabo Verdes. We really had a nice time on La Gomera and El Hierro but more about this later! At this moment there is a suitable weather window and we are eager to sail to our next destination. At 10:10 we leave the dock and raise the sails. Two other ships leave at the same time to set course to the south. We enjoy being on the ocean a lot and we will try to send an update daily.

A small poststamp computer of 2 Euro's can be used to activate the ships illumination (like anchor light) between sunset and sunrise automatically, to monitor the lamps for correct operation, and to adjust the backlight illumination of the switch panel to the ambient light. Description of a small nice Do It Yourself project!

How and why we decided, without considerable experience, to travel around the world in a sailing yacht. How we got the idea, took the decision, how we prepared, and how we bought a sailing yacht.

Tuamotu
Tuamotu - Idyllic atolls with rugged reefs > Blog > Tuamotu
Tuamotu is also called the dangerous archipelago and for good reason. Rock hard, stony and sharp coral that unexpectedly rises steeply and erratically from the bottom of the sea and as if that wasn't spicy enough, a sauce with spicy and unpredictable currents is added to it. But to be fair, since the days of GPS, the skipper's life has been a lot less uncertain in this archipelago (because at least you know where you are, even when it is completely cloudy and dark!) And all in all, the risk is acceptable and the attraction great ... Because Tuamotu is also: crystal clear water, large lagoons where you can anchor. Coral rich, fish rich, shark rich, coconuts on uninhabited islands (motu), remote, unspoiled, palm trees with white beaches.
